The Candy Basslet is considered the most beautiful of all Liopropoma species. As such, it is the holy grail of reef basslets and has a price tag to match. Not to be confused with the much cheaper Swalesi Basslet which is sometimes known as the Pacific Candy Basslet. If you are looking for a gem that is not only rare but incredibly beautiful, this is it.
The Candy Basslet is collected from around the Caribbean Oceans at depths of up to 200 feet. Like all members of the genus Liopropoma, they are a deepwater species that are rarely collected because of it. Despite the fact that not many turn up in the market, they are sold very quickly to collectors.
This basslet is stunning. Not only are they considered the most beautiful among other Liopropoma but some consider them the most beautiful reef fish period. They have a bright orange body highlighted by equally bright purple horizontal streaks. The colors found on the candy basslet are very intense and are said to look even better up close. They do not possess a black spot upon their anal fins unlike the Swissguard Basslet and Swalesi Basslet.
Their scientific name is Liopropoma Carmabi and they are the most expensive member within this family. A single specimen can range between six hundred to a thousand dollars. Their price tags are not for the faint hearted.
The candy basslet is also considered the boldest within the genus. Once acclimated, they can be seen out in the open regularly, which is a bonus. Expect them to be a bit on the shy side initially.
Like other species within this family of fishes, the Candy Basslet is considered a cave bass. They require ample hiding spots and plenty of shaded areas to feel secure. Not considered aggressive, they can be bullied so choose tankmates wisely.
All liopropoma are incredibly hardy marine fish once acclimated and feeding. They are also disease resistant and very tolerant of water conditions. If they are feeding and they have a suitable environment, they are hardier than even the much vaunted clownfish and damselfish.
Species that come from the genus Liopropoma are all strictly carnivores that roam the rock structure for small prey to feed on. As such, smaller crustaceans such as the sexy shrimp and fish that can fit in their mouth are bad tankmates to consider.
They should be given meaty food on a daily basis. They usually do not accept dry fish food such as flake food or pellets. Some great choices for them include * Mysis Shrimp, * Prime Reef and * Frozen Krill. These basslets usually adapt very quickly to frozen foods after a few days.
